Biogeographical Patterns of Endolithic Infestation in an Invasive and an Indigenous Intertidal Marine Ecosystem Engineer ArchiMer
Ndhlovu, Aldwin; Mcquaid, Christopher D.; Nicastro, Katy; Marquet, Nathalie; Gektidis, Marcos; Monaco, Cristian; Zardi, Gerardo.
By altering the phenotypic properties of their hosts, endolithic parasites can modulate the engineering processes of marine ecosystem engineers. Here, we assessed the biogeographical patterns of species assemblages, prevalence and impact of endolithic parasitism in two mussel species that act as important ecosystem engineers in the southern African intertidal habitat, Perna perna and Mytilus galloprovincialis. We conducted large-scale surveys across three biogeographic regions along the South African coast: the subtropical east coast, dominated by the indigenous mussel, P. perna, the warm temperate south coast, where this species coexists with the invasive Mediterranean mussel, M. galloprovincialis, and the cool temperate west coast dominated by M....

Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) of the intertidal zone of Governador and Paquetá islands, Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Grohmann,Priscila A..
During six consecutive months, sampling were made at three points located on Governador Island and three on Paquetá Island in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Material was collected from dock pilings and rocks in the intertidal zone. In these samples, five species belonging to three families, Corynidae, Kirchenpaueriidae and Campanulariidae, were identified. The campanulariid species Obelia dichotoma Linnaeus, 1758, dominated at nearly all points sampled. The small number of species obtained in this survey is attributed to the intense pollution in the bay, which borders the second-largest industrial complex and the second-largest demographic center of Brazil.

Is there redundancy in bioengineering for molluscan assemblages on the rocky shores of central Chile? RChHN
KELAHER,BRENDAN P; CASTILLA,JUAN CARLOS; PRADO,LUIS.
Bioengineers modify habitats via their own physical structures and substantially increase local diversity in marine ecosystems. On rocky shores, there are large overlaps in the composition of communities associated with bioengineers that form complex mat-like habitats. We investigated the potential for redundancy in habitat provision by these types of habitats by comparing diverse molluscan assemblages associated with Perumytilus purpuratus mussel beds and algal turfs of Corallina officinalis var. chilenis, Gelidium chilense and Gastroclonium cylindricum. At three times between September 2003 and January 2004, we sampled the molluscan assemblages associated with each bioengineer at similar tidal heights on two rocky shores on the coast of central Chile. Of...

Morphometric variation in two intertidal littorinid gastropods Naturalis
Queiroga, H.; Costa, R.; Leonardo, N.; Soares, D.; Cleary, D.F.R..
Here we investigate spatial variation in shell shape of Littorina saxatilis, an ovoviviparous species, and Melarhaphe neritoides, a species with planktonic eggs and larvae. Populations of both species were sampled in 6 sites located along the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Shell shape was studied using landmarkbased morphometric methods. Landmark data was used to estimate individual size and to describe shell shape. Prior to statistical analysis specimens were aligned using Generalised Procrustes Analysis (GPA). Ordinations based on GPA of landmark data and using Principal Components Analysis (PCA), revealed a clear spatial segregation of sites for both species, although this was more evident for L. saxatilis than M. neritoides. Statistical analysis...

Ophiothrix synoecina (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea: Ophiotrichidae): especie endémica y vulnerable del Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
Monroy-López, M.; Solano, O.D..
The presence of Ophiothrix synoecina Schoppe in the Guajira area (Cabo de la Vela), and the contribution of new information about its distribution and density, allowed the reevaluation of the category proposed on the Marine Invertebrates Red List, because of its small and fragmentary area of nine localities through the Colombian Caribbean rocky-shore.

Coppejans, E..
Thanks to this psychological study, stretched over a period of four years (1968-1972) on the algae population of the Le Dramont rocky coasts, we had the possibility to distinguish 19 different groups. Their apportionment and floristic composition have been consciously observed and studied, in summer as well as during spring, and this up to a depth of 45 m. A high number (35) of sections were done for that purpose, all over the work territory. Some of them are reproduced here (fig. 1, 2, 3, 4), with an indication of the placement of the different groups. Next, we compared our results with those of previous works, and we were able to conclude that the studied area is very analogue to the one of the J. Feldman study of the Albères Coast.

Small-scale effects of hydrodynamics on the structure of intertidal macroalgal communities: A novel approach ArchiMer
Burel, Thomas; Schaal, Gauthier; Grall, Jacques; Le Duff, Michel; Chapalain, Georges; Schmitt, Blondie; Gemin, Maxence; Boucher, Olivier; Ar Gall, Erwan.
Wave height was used as a proxy to assess the effect of hydrodynamics on the development and structure of intertidal North-East Atlantic rocky macroalgal communities (Brittany). The characterization of hydrodynamics at small-scale (about 10 m) was performed through wave height in situ monitoring using pressure sensors. Both the diversity and the cover of the macroalgal communities were sampled in parallel. Wave heights exhibit large variations with values ranging from ca. 5 cm to 1.60 m. We show that wave height directly controls the cover of macroalgal canopies (Pearson's r between −0.62 and −0.39). In all communities, most of the fucoid covers regressed with increasing wave height values. By contrast, positive correlations were found at low shore levels...
